I was shocked. Or “shook”, as the young folks today would put it.

This is going to be a very hasty introduction, and let’s get right into it! It’s September 2024 today, and from informal polls that I ran (~ 20 people — from my team at work to my friends recently), I came to a realisation.

Roughly 50% of those polled don’t use coding assistants at all! 😱

OMG, is this true?

Wait, what? — This might have been your reaction, and mine too as well. This was surprising, given the explosion and general enthusiasm towards AI in recent years.

Given that my sample size was just ~20 people, and some of the polled engineers were those that I manage at work, these were suboptimal conditions for an accurate and unbiased poll. So, I decided to look around to see if this trend was reflected in society, and found some interesting data points:

How much less have you used StackOverflow this year? — source: Retool State of AI Report 2023

If you look at the above 2023 study from Retool on StackOverflow usage, you’ll see the story adds up. There was around 57.6%
